We have the choice, with every encounter of another human being, to make a hell out of the relationship or to make a heaven.

A Course In Miralcles says that only what you are not giving can be missing in any relationship, this means that because anyone standing in front of us is a reflection of who we are, if you are not seeing love, know that you are not generating love and choose once again to be loving.

The course also says that anything that is not love is a call for love and we should love more; if someone standing in front of us is behaving in an unloving way, know that they are coming from a wounded place in themselves and open your heart to them in compassion.

Defending yourself from attack simply creates a vicious circle of attack and blame which serves no one whilst opening your heart and feeling compassion for their pain creates a loving space for them to step into. Just saying "I hear you." usually stops any ego tantrums, try it and see.
